Environmental Teachers Corps

In an innovative approach to business and education partnerships, Georgia Power is offering exciting, hands-on environmental programs for your classroom. These programs, designed for students in grades K-5, teach environmental awareness in essential areas such as: Recycling, Water Use, Habitats, Air Quality and Energy Resource Management. The programs have been developed by educators to address the state's educational standards.

The Georgia Power environmental programs are presented by a statewide network of volunteers. To arrange for programs in your area, please call your local Georgia Power office.

For Kindergarten: Animal Habitats

HOP INTO HABITATS
Based on the book Liz Looks for a Home by Joanna Cole, Tracey West and Bruce Degen, the "Hop into Habitats" course teaches children about habitats and the importance of food, water, shelter and space for different animals. Children will also participate in a role-playing game that gives them a chance to work together to create habitats based on the needs of each animal.

For First Grade: Recycling

THE TRIPLE "R" RANGER
In this informative lesson, the Triple "R" Ranger uses "The Recycling Song," combined with an interactive demonstration using assorted "trash" to teach students how to reduce, reuse and recycle their personal trash. This exciting lesson teaches children awareness of their impact on the environment and how they can take personal responsibility for minimizing it.

For Second Grade: Water Quality

RENEW OUR RIVERS
The "Renew Our Rivers" course uses games to teach children the importance of water conservation and to raise their awareness of water pollution. Children work together in groups to solve puzzles that identify ways to conserve water. Students discuss the different types of pollution and their effects on watersheds and how people can make a difference. Students will use watershed models to simulate what happens with water pollution when it rains.

For Third Grade: Air Quality

AIR, AIR, EVERYWHERE!
Students learn ways to reduce air pollution in the "Air, Air, Everywhere" course. A game of team trivia tests their knowledge of the causes and effects of air pollution. Using a felt board representing a thriving city, students examine population growth and learn how the needs of a growing population create additional pollution.

For Fifth Grade: Sources of Energy

ENERGIZE ME!
Students explore different sources of energy and discuss factors of availability, cost, environmental impact, and reliability. They put their newly learned knowledge to the test in a presentation contest. Student groups are assigned an energy source and create presentations to persuade peers to select their energy source for use. The course emphasizes the need for balanced use of energy sources.

For Sixth Grade: Natural Resources

REVEALING RESOURCES
In the "Revealing Resources" course, students play several games to test their knowledge of renewable and non-renewable resources. Presenters discuss the different types of natural resources and ways to preserve them. Students learn they are responsible for preserving natural resources for generations to come.
