Georgia Power

Parade of Excellence

Georgia Power has been the title sponsor of the Parade of Excellence for the past several years. The parade highlights excellence in education, and our company is a committed and long-standing supporter of education in our communities.

The parade provides a fantastic opportunity for the 100 Black Men of Atlanta and Georgia Power to showcase and celebrate the academic excellence and achievements of some of Georgia’s best and brightest middle and high school students.

As the title sponsor of the Parade of Excellence, Georgia Power will be the presenting sponsor of the Project Success Robotics Team (Team Success). Team Success, whose focuses are robotics and space exploration, allows Project Success students with an aptitude for math and science to become part of the program.

Entertainment will include the FAMU Marching 100 and the TSU Aristocrat of Bands, along with some of the most talented students and high school bands from Georgia and throughout the Southeast. The parade will be shown live on WSB-TV on Sept. 27, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will start at the corner of Peachtree Street at Ralph McGill Boulevard.

This year, Kathy Cox, Georgia superintendent of schools, and our very own Sgt. Lafayette Reid, senior secretary of fleet services in Lawrenceville, will serve as the Grand Marshals.

The game between Florida A&M and Tennessee State will take place at 4 p.m. in the Georgia Dome. Tickets are on sale now. Call Ticketmaster or go to atlantafootballclassic.com. Proceeds from the game benefit the Project Success program along with students at Florida A&M and Tennessee State universities.

Project Success is a post-secondary preparation and tuition-assistance program that was started by the 100 Black Men of Atlanta in 1987. The program began with only 35 eighth-graders (Phase I). Most of these students have graduated from college and are now living successful lives. The current phases of Project Success include Phase III, which consists of 100 students who are freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in college, and Phase IV, which has 56 students (28 fourth-graders and 28 ninth-graders).

The components of Project Success are the 100 Academy, Collegiate 100, Family & Youth Empowerment Program, and the 100 Resource Learning Center. Each has been instrumental in raising the level of students' academic performance, which has surpassed the Atlanta Public School System.
